South American airline GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes has ordered 60 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes, the companies announced Monday.

The 737 MAX is a new version of Boeing's workhorse single-aisle airliner, outfitted with more-efficient CFM LEAP-1B engines. It's scheduled to enter service in 2017.

GOL's order is worth approximately $6 billion at list prices, although airlines get substantial, undisclosed discounts. This value makes the order the largest in GOL's 12-year history and the largest airplane order ever from a single South American airline.

"The decision to order Boeing 737 MAX is in line with our commitment to maintaining a modern and safe fleet that will allow us to sustain our competitive advantage in the long term," GOL CEL Paulo Kakinoff said in a news release. "The new airplanes will have one of the best cost-benefit ratios in the market due to its unique operational economy, so it is fully compatible with our low-cost model."
