BORREGO SPRINGS,CA,USA. — A pilot was killed Saturday when he jumped from an aerobatic plane that was having a mechanical problem over a Southern California airport and his parachute apparently malfunctioned.
The pilot, who was the only person on board the MXS aerobatic plane, crashed to the ground with the aircraft around 12:30 p.m. north of Borrego Valley Airport, which is about 90 miles northeast of San Diego, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said.
He was performing stunt maneuvers at the airport at the time of the crash, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. Mike Mohler.
Kenitzer said the single-engine, fixed-wing aircraft was severely damaged.
