AMERICAN AIRLINES PILOTS CIRCLE STATE HOUSE TO PROTEST PAY CUTS

American Airlines pilots picketed at Boston’s Logan International Airport and the State House yesterday to call attention to pay and benefit cuts implemented by the carrier.

The cost-cutting measures follow a U.S. bankruptcy court judge’s ruling this month that the Fort Worth, Texas, airline could set aside its contract with the pilots’ union.

American on Monday signaled a desire to return to the bargaining table, and the Allied Pilots Association plans to meet today to determine its next steps.

“The bankruptcy process allowed the corporation to literally torch the entire contract, so we’re left with nothing at this point,” said Tom Hoban, a pilot for American and a union spokesman.

American’s “term sheet” includes no funding for the pilots’ retirement plan, pay cuts, reduced health insurance contributions and the ability to outsource more jobs, according to Hoban. “We believe we’ve got a legal right to strike, and we’re seeking authority to do that from the National Mediation Board and the bankruptcy court,” he said.
